In Memoriam – World Routes

posted in: Music | 0

World Routes, the only BBC programme dedicated to original research into world music, has finished after thirteen years.  It introduced us to traditional music from all corners of the world: the music of Cuba (three programmes spanning a 1000-mile journey across the island); the Cape Verde Islands, including the late diva Cesaria Evora; Madagascar; the griot music of Mali; three programmes on the music of Peru; and music from many festivals from WOMAD to Fez and beyond.  Each programme featured discussion with the artists and local details as well as the music.  It will be sorely missed.

There is still an archive on the BBC site; and a double CD album called ‘world routes on the road’ (NASCE001).
